HOW TO PLAY SOCCER SITEMAP

Teach an english speaking person how to play soccer BY MAKING A SITEMAP

Type of Project:  UX Design | Teammates: Lauren Ferrari, Cassidy Huhn, Brandon Johnson | Programs: Illustrator

Comment: I am not an athletic person at all! Going into this project, I knew absolutely nothing about soccer, so this whole process was a learning experience. I had to take what I learned about soccer and apply it to this project. This finished piece is also different from the original finished piece because I used feedback on my own and made changes to the overall sitemap.

My Role

Since this was a team project, everyone had different jobs to do to come together and create a sitemap. One of the roles I had was to break down several areas of soccer. The breakdowns were completed through pencil and paper and then moved to the whiteboard. These breakdowns were
researched and combined with my teammates’ research.

Interview with the Coach & Research

Before a finalized sitemap was made, we interviewed the head coach of the Men’s Soccer team at Millersville University, Steven Widdowson. We wanted to ask the coach some questions that we couldn’t find the direct answers to online. Some of the items we asked

the coach were:

  • What is an essential thing in the game?

  • What are some unwritten rules?

  • What is the best formation or most common?

  • What is FB? (full back)

The interview with the coach and further research from our team lead us to start creating the first set of sitemaps. We also were able to test

on several users and ask them for their feedback. Some of the feedback we received was:

  • add “acts as a support for play” after center mid

  • explain what the body is supposed to mean

  • offsides need more info

  • icons help visually

  • define direct and indirect kicks

Final group sitemap

This is the sitemap my group and I made together. We broke out into different groups to tackle several areas. Cassidy worked on reworking the map while I helped tell her the feedback we received and talk through what to change. Lauren worked on the long sentence description and looked at different fonts and colors from Fifa games to get inspiration. Brandon worked on icons and imagery for our map, so they’re consistent.
